Accelerate Your Career this Week with 3 Actionable Tips
My goal with this post is to give you 3 things you can do this week to improve your career and make it something you can read in less than 3 minutes. Let’s dive in!
#1: Learn About ChatGPT
I’m pretty sure all of you have heard about ChatGPT (if you have not, read this article), but I’m still surprised by how many people have not actually used it.
My first tip this week, is to spend at least 15 minutes actually using ChatGPT.
Why?
Because this type of generative AI capabilities will soon be coming to products everywhere and I believe everyone will be better at their job if they understand the current strengths and weaknesses.
So - go to
https://chat.openai.com/
Create a free account and start playing around!
Try to really experiment with the different prompts (the inputs you type into the chat) and see how that changes the results. Take some mental notes on where it seems really useful and where it falls short. See if you can get it to confidently give you a wrong answer. :)
#2: Increase the Trust on Your Team by Sharing Something Authentic
Trust is a deeply studied topic and we know that it is central to high-performing teams, but developing trust within a team can be elusive.
The three pillars of trust are:
Empathy
Rigor in Logic
Authenticity
If you can improve in these areas, then you are very likely to grow trust. If either of these areas is in jeopardy, then trust will dwindle.
One thing you can do this week is just share something authentic about yourself with your team. Some ideas:
Share what you did over the weekend
Talk about a hobby you have
Be a bit more open in your next team meeting about your thoughts on the subject being discussed
These are all seemingly small things, but they can really go a long way to building trust.
#3: The Energy Calendar
Perhaps the best thing we can all learn how to do better is managing our time. One technique I have found helpful is the Energy Calendar method from Sahil Bloom.
Essentially, at the end of every day, go back through your calendar and color code how you spent your time. Green is high energy, yellow is neutral, and red is low energy.
Then after doing this for a few days or weeks you can start to analyze how you spend your time and what trends emerge.
The goal is to start doing as much high-energy work as you can while eliminating the low-energy work.
I’ve personally found this very helpful to start to develop a quick sense of what types of meetings and activities are useful and which are not.
There you have it! 3 tips for the week! If you found this useful, please subscribe and share this post. It really helps me understand what people enjoy reading.
Some great places to share are LinkedIn and Twitter, or text it to a friend, or even share it in a work Slack channel. It really does mean a lot, so thank you!
