Imagine dedicating each day of the coming work week to sharpening a specific facet of your leadership. Picture the insights you’d unlock, the growth you’d spur. The potential transformation? Absolutely staggering. Keep reading to find a step-by-step plan to grow as a leader.
Now, let’s be clear: mastering the art of leadership isn’t about quick fixes or overnight metamorphoses. Yet, by immersing yourself, even briefly, in these essential domains, you’re bound to experience a shift—a tantalizing glimpse into the breadth of your capabilities.
It’s a common trap for leaders to remain ensconced within the familiar confines of their default leadership style, inadvertently stunting their own growth. It’s time we break free from this mold.
What follows is a roadmap for the next five days. Each day is dedicated to a pivotal leadership principle, complete with actionable steps, a challenge to embrace, and, for those hungry for deeper dives, a book recommendation. I wholeheartedly believe that allocating just 30-60 minutes daily to these exercises will catalyze profound growth in your leadership journey. Let’s get started! And please leave a comment if you are going to join me on this challenge!
Day 1: Discover Your Leadership Values
Focus: Self-awareness and Vision
Action: Reflect on leaders you admire and the type of leader you aspire to be. What values do they embody? List these values and consider how they might apply to your leadership style. Try to list 3-5 total values.
Challenge: Write a personal leadership vision statement incorporating these values. Keep it to a few sentences that are easy to remember and will anchor you as a leader going forward.
Book Recommendation: True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership by Bill George and Peter Sims.
Day 2: Improve Communication
Focus: Empathy and Clarity
Action: Practice active listening in all your conversations today. Focus on truly understanding the speaker's message before responding. They call it active listening because you should be engaged while listening, so put away any distractions and open your ears.
Challenge: Have a difficult conversation you've been avoiding. Approach the conversation with empathy and clarity while actively listening to ensure you have all the information.
Book Recommendation: Radical Candor by Kim Scott.
Day 3: Delegate Strategically
Focus: Empowerment and Trust
Action: Identify tasks that can be delegated. Consider which team member's growth could be supported by taking on this task. Write down all the necessary context and expectations so the task is clear.
Challenge: Delegate the task with clear instructions and trust the process. Also, find time to follow up on progress and help with blockers.
Book Recommendation: High Output Management by Andrew S. Grove.
Day 4: Foster a Culture of Innovation
Focus: Creativity and Experimentation
Action: Encourage your team to propose out-of-the-box solutions for a current project. No idea is too small or too big. Make sure to consider at least three very different options.
Challenge: Select one idea to prototype or explore further, regardless of its immediate feasibility. This might sound scary, but even a rough prototype to show to customers can help your team see how your users react to more creativity and innovation.
Book Recommendation: The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen.
Day 5: Embrace and Learn from Failures
Focus: Resilience and Growth
Action: Share a personal story of failure with your team and what you learned from it. Invite them to share their stories too. This will not only show your resilience and growth from failure but will also foster increased trust within your team.
Challenge: Identify a recent project mishap and brainstorm ways to improve from the experience. Focus the brainstorm on how the team can improve and avoid any finger-pointing. The goal of this exercise is to learn from failure and grow.
Book Recommendation: Grit by Angela Duckworth.
As you wrap up this intensive week of leadership enhancement, it’s vital to recognize that the journey toward exceptional leadership is ongoing. The exercises and challenges we've undertaken this week are not mere boxes to tick off but are stepping stones to deeper understanding and mastery. The real power lies in the sustained commitment to these practices and the openness to continuously evolve. I encourage you to revisit these exercises periodically, reflecting on your progress and recalibrating your approach as you evolve as a leader.
I look forward to hearing about your journeys and the transformations. Leadership is an experience best shared, so let's continue to support and learn from one another.
